What Is a PCD Pharma Franchise and How Does It Actually Work?

PCD stands for Propaganda Cum Distribution. In this model a pharmaceutical company grants an individual or firm the right to market and distribute its products in a defined territory, under the company's brand names, using promotional material the company supplies.

Who does what

The company manufactures (or gets manufactured on loan licence), owns the brands, handles regulatory compliance and supplies stock along with promotional inputs. The franchise partner appoints the field team, calls on doctors and chemists in the allotted territory, books orders and services the local trade.

How the commercials work

Products are supplied at a PTS (Price to Stockist) or PTR (Price to Retailer) linked rate against the printed MRP. The difference between the supply rate and the trade price is the partner's gross margin. Different therapeutic segments carry different margin bands, and pack configuration affects landed cost.

What a franchise partner is really buying

• A ready product basket with established composition sets
• Brand names they do not have to build regulatory files for
• Promotional inputs — visual aids, sample packs, prescription pads, gifts
• Exclusivity in an agreed geography, where monopoly rights are granted

What it is not

A PCD arrangement is not a manufacturing licence, and it is not a guarantee of sales. The partner still needs a valid drug licence, a GST registration and — most importantly — the field effort to convert prescriptions in their territory.

Before you sign

Ask for the rate list with PTS/PTR and MRP side by side, confirm the exact territory in writing, check which promotional inputs are free and which are chargeable, and get clarity on the minimum purchase commitment that keeps the monopoly alive.
